Huntsville YMCA Files for Bankruptcy
The Huntsville YMCA, also known as the Heart of the Valley YMCA, announced it is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Alabama. Despite this decision, the organization plans to continue all operations and services without interruption. The decision by the YMCA Board of Directors aims to restructure financially and ensure the YMCA's long-term sustainability. Challenges cited include a significant mortgage payment due, decreased membership since the pandemic, and rising maintenance costs.
I go to the downtown location, and I can’t recommend it enough. It has everything you need equipment-wise, including a sauna and steam room. It is very convenient for anyone living downtown.
Improvements Around Pratt Avenue in Huntsville Complete
Navigating Pratt Avenue in Huntsville is now easier, thanks to the completion of several construction projects. Over the past two years, the city upgraded the aging sewer system, replaced a century-old brick storm culvert, added new sewer lines, and improved water mains. Additionally, construction on the Stella at Five Points apartment building has wrapped up, with half of the units now open and a restaurant set to open on the ground floor next year. Despite the temporary congestion, these improvements have enhanced the area’s walkability and safety, making Pratt Avenue more accessible for residents.
Construction Begins on New West Huntsville Recreation Center
Ground has officially been broken for the new West Huntsville recreation center, marking the start of a year-long construction project in the City’s fifth district. Located at 150 Martin Road, just west of Zierdt Road, this one-story, 27,350-square-foot facility will resemble the Mark Russell Recreation Center, one of the busiest in Huntsville. This new center will address the need for recreational facilities in an area that has experienced significant residential growth. It will feature a gymnasium with two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, three indoor pickleball courts, three outdoor pickleball courts, and landscaped areas.
New John Hunt Park Recreation Center to Feature State-of-the-Art Pickleball Facilities
The upcoming John Hunt Park Recreation Center is set to expand recreational opportunities in Huntsville’s largest park, especially for the city’s growing pickleball community. The $18.5 million project will include 25 lighted outdoor pickleball courts covered by an engineered metal structure to minimize weather disruptions. The Huntsville City Council has approved a construction agreement with Fite Building Company, with construction slated to begin in fall 2024. The center will be located on approximately 8.5 acres north of Joe Davis Stadium.
