January 10, 1891 - The Huntsville Gazette

A Terrific Explosion-A Boiler in the Basement of the Halsey Building explodes with a Tremendous Report

About two o'clock yesterday afternoon the denizens in the vicinity of the Halsey Building on Jefferson Street , became greatly alarmed when a tremendous report greeted their ears. It was soon discovered that the steam boiler in the basement of the building, used for heating the numerous apartments of the structure, had burst. Mr. A. Maxwell, tailor, who occupied a room on the lower floor and just above and over the machine, was thrown violently to the front of his store. The boiler left its position in the basement and shot through and landed on the first floor above. The floor, wall and ceiling of this room looked as though a cyclone had visited it, and the interior was a mass of destruction.
