Light Up the Night at Big Spring Park ⭐

Join Huntsville Parks & Recreation for Light Up the Night tonight, Friday, July 26, from 6-9 p.m. in Big Spring Park. Enjoy live music, dancing, glow-in-the-dark face paint, and more. The event promises fun for all ages with glow foam cannons and special light-up party favors for the first 100 children. Concessions will be available from food trucks along Church Street and around Big Spring Park West.

Calhoun Community College Receives $100,000 for Lineman Program

Calhoun Community College has received $100,000 from Huntsville Utilities and TVA to support its Pre-Apprentice Linemen Program. This partnership addresses the growing demand for utility services in Huntsville-Madison County by providing essential training for future linemen. The 7-week program will offer scholarships covering tuition, transportation, lunch, mentorship, and tools for ten recipients, removing financial barriers. Dr. Jimmy Hodges, Calhoun President, emphasized the program's job prospects, while Mark Brown of TVA highlighted the need for a skilled workforce to meet increasing electricity demand. The next class runs from October 28 to December 13, 2024.

Huntsville Adding New Music Tech Space at the Shurney Center

Teens in Huntsville will soon have a new place to explore music technology as city leaders plan to renovate the second floor of the Dr. Robert Shurney Legacy Center into a music tech space. Councilmember Devyn Keith announced the transformation, featuring areas for recording music or podcasts, learning about instruments, and even spaces for music lessons. Keith emphasized the project's aim to provide a creative outlet for the community with high-end equipment comparable to those in larger cities. The project builds on the Huntsville Public Library’s music program and is set to be completed by early 2025.

Huntsville to Break Ground on New Skating Rink at Stoner Park

The City of Huntsville is starting construction on a new 19,000 sqft open-air pavilion at Stoner Park. This pavilion will serve as a recreational skating rink with restrooms and picnic facilities, enhancing Stoner Park as a versatile recreational space. The groundbreaking event was held on Wednesday, July 24, at 10 AM, featuring remarks from Parks + Recreation Director James Gossett and City Council Member Devyn Keith. The skating rink will be next to the parking lot, across from the baseball fields at 3715 Bragg St.

Huntsville Awarded $50 Million Grant for Mill Creek Revitalization

The City of Huntsville has received a $50 million grant to help transform Mill Creek, located west of Memorial Parkway between Seminole Drive, Clinton Avenue, and Governors Drive. This grant is the first part of a $350 million investment to redevelop the area. The multi-year plan includes mixed-income housing, medical and childcare services, and retail options. Starting this year, Phase one focuses on an 84-unit building for UD/disabled residents. Phase two will add 100 units for seniors, and phases three through five will provide 396 family units. The project is expected to be completed by 2033.

Registration Open for Huntsville Parks & Recreation’s Fall Youth Sports

Registration is now open for Huntsville Parks & Recreation’s fall youth sports, including flag football, cheer, soccer, and volleyball, with eight leagues available: American, Continental, Eastern, International, Lakewood, Liberty, Metro, and Northern. In-person registration for the Continental, Lakewood, Metro, and Northern leagues will take place on the following dates:

  • Continental League: July 20, 27, and August 3 from 9 a.m. to noon at Brahan Spring Recreation Center

  • Lakewood League: July 20, 27, and August 3 from 10 a.m. to noon at Lakewood Community Center

Nick Dunlap Makes History at the Barracuda Championship

Huntsville native and Alabama Crimson Tide alum Nick Dunlap made history on the final day of the Barracuda Championship, leaping 27 spots on the leaderboard and shooting a 19 at Tahoe Mountain Club’s Old Greenwood Course to secure his first Tour Championship as a pro. On Sunday, Dunlap became the first player in PGA history to win at a tour stop as both an amateur and a pro in the same season, following his January victory at the American Express.

Julyon Jordan Commits to South Alabama

Guntersville High School running back Julyon Jordan has committed to South Alabama, choosing the Jaguars over several Power 4 conference schools, including Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Virginia. Jordan, who stands at 5-foot-11 and weighs 175 pounds, is South Alabama’s seventh commitment for the 2025 class and the third from an in-state player.

Alabama A&M Offensive Lineman Carson Vinson Selected to 100th Annual East-West Shrine Bowl Watchlist

On Tuesday, Alabama A&M University offensive lineman Carson Vinson was selected to the 100th Annual East-West Shrine Bowl 1,000 Watchlist. Vinson, a projected fourth-round NFL draft pick, was selected to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Preseason Second Team. In 2023, Vinson helped the Bulldogs' offense average 374.6 yards per game, including 221.1 yards in the air. His play contributed to Alabama A&M leading the conference in red zone offense. Alabama A&M will kick off the 2024 season on Saturday, August 31, when the Bulldogs visit Auburn.
