Alabama Increases Classroom Transparency for Parents

Alabama parents will have more access to their children's classroom topics this academic year as the state pushes for greater school transparency. In March 2024, Governor Kay Ivey signed the Parents Right to Know Act, mandating schools to post their curriculum online. This initiative allows parents to review their child's textbooks and required readings, fostering an active role in their student’s education. While the online curriculum will not include day-to-day assignments, parents can contact schools for specific concerns. The information will appear on school websites in the coming weeks, with district postings for schools without websites.

Alabama Libraries to Implement New Policies for Child Protection

Libraries across Alabama must update their policies to prevent children under 18 from accessing adult materials without parental permission. This will require library layouts and service changes. Children with library cards will need parental approval to access adult materials. The library is seeking community feedback and evaluating the impact on its system and staffing.

Huntsville Police Release School Safety Guidelines

Huntsville Police issued safety guidelines before the school year. They enforce a zero-tolerance policy for speeding in school zones and urge caution at intersections and crosswalks. Drivers must stop for school buses with extended stop signs and consider alternate routes to avoid school zones. The hands-free ordinance now allows officers to stop and cite drivers for violations.

Visiting Big Ed’s Pizzeria

When you’re half-starved as you clock out in Rocket City, what’s better than picking up a good pepperoni pizza to end the day? Nothing, in our opinion, and Big Ed’s delivers. This pizza joint has been around for more than 60 years.

While oldheads will fondly remember its former location on Memorial, Big Ed’s Pizza is now cozily tucked away on Pratt Avenue with an eye-catching, retro red building.
