Join the week three of Jazz in the Park-Huntsville 2024! New York guitarist JJ Sansaverino will headline week three, with Miami-based Latin band Tony & The Kings and Nina Marie opening. The theme is Heritage Night, so join in celebrating the start of Hispanic Heritage Month with Tony & The Kings bringing some Miami heat! Bring a chair or blanket, enjoy nearby food trucks and restaurants and interact with local nonprofits, while you enjoy music from some of the nation's best jazz musicians!

TVA announces applications open for K-12 STEM Education Grants
The Tennessee Valley Authority is offering STEM Classroom Grants of up to $5,000 to support STEM learning projects in schools across its seven-state service area. Teachers and school administrators can apply for these grants until September 15. TVA President Jeff Lyash emphasized supporting STEM education in preparing the future workforce. The grants prioritize energy-related projects, environmental stewardship, economic development, career development, and community problem-solving.
Eligible applicants must be teachers or school administrators in public or private schools, grades K-12, located within the TVA service area. Schools must receive electricity from a local power distributor served by TVA.
City of Huntsville secures $21M for Holmes Avenue revamp
Huntsville has secured a $21.6 million federal grant to enhance safety along a 3.25-mile stretch of Holmes Avenue. This initiative aligns with the City's Vision Zero goal of zero roadway fatalities. The project will introduce various safety measures, including bike lanes, crosswalks, sidewalks, traffic signalization, pedestrian lighting, and accessible bus stops. Mayor Tommy Battle expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that it will make the UAH corridor safer for everyone.
New Center for the Arts facility will expand music and dance skills for students
The Alabama Center for the Arts has started building a new $15 million facility to expand music and dance programs. Students and officials are excited about the project, which will include dancing areas, music practice rooms, and other resources. The 14,000-square-foot facility is expected to be finished in January 2026.

Two Athens businesses earn statewide recognitions
Epiphany Boutiques and Li’l Mazarra’s were honored with Alabama Retailer of the Year awards, respectively. Dawne Douthit and her daughter, Jessica Douthit Clark, co-owners of Epiphany Boutique, began their business selling women’s apparel and accessories 13 years ago. Their stores in Madison and Athens offer fuss-free, stylish clothing for women of all ages. The Alabama Retail Association recognized their success in the “Annual Sales Less Than $1 Million” category for their growth, customer service, and community involvement. ChurchStreet Family, owned by Matt and Stephanie Mell, also won the award in the “Annual Sales More Than $5 Million” category for their diverse restaurant and bar concepts. Their businesses are known for immersive dining experiences and support of local events like the Crush Wine and Food Festival. Both businesses were praised for their dedication to their communities, customer experience, and innovative growth.
HudsonAlpha receives ‘Best in STEM’ award for new educational kit
HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology won the 2024 Best in STEM award for their educational kit, recognized for its effectiveness in helping students analyze and interpret genetic data. The kit, created in collaboration with Carolina Biological, teaches how traits like disease risk are distributed across populations and how this can inform healthcare decisions. HudsonAlpha’s materials are used in nearly all Alabama public schools and across 34 countries, contributing to advancements in STEM education and public health strategies.

With the loss against Miami, the team moved to 6-13-5, and we were knocked out of playoff contention. The Boys in Blue will next face Atlanta United 2 on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. CT at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Georgia. You can purchase tickets here for the next home game 9/22

Huntsville City Football Club was eliminated from playoff contention after a 2-0 loss to Inter Miami CF II at Wicks Family Field at Joe Davis Stadium. Notable moments from the game include Tyler Pasnik's return since Aug. 10, Joey Skinner’s 40th all-time appearance for Huntsville, and Tristan Tropeano’s home debut. Huntsville conceded two or fewer goals in six straight matches. In the game, Alejandro Flores scored for Inter Miami in the 10th minute, followed by a goal from Ryan Carmichael in the 71st. Huntsville’s Jordan Knight was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in the 73rd minute. 4,056 fans attended the game.

The Southern Showcase Cross Country Meet
The Southern Showcase, hosted by Huntsville High School and Jacksonville State University, is a two-day cross-country meet at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, AL. With over 150 teams and over 5,000 runners, the event features high school and college races. The meet runs from September 13-14, 2024, with college races starting Friday morning and high school events throughout Friday evening and Saturday.
