Junior Gardening Workshop 🌱🪴🌞

It's thyme for another Junior Gardening Workshop! Join Drew, the Sustainability Coordinator and garden extraordinaire, on July 20 to learn the ins and outs of starting a Summer Herb Garden. Attendees will plant heat—and drought-resistant herbs like rosemary, basil, oregano, parsley, and thyme. These FREE classes start at 10 AM in the Apollo South Dome and are held every half hour until 12 PM. All supplies are provided—just bring your green thumb!

The city's job market is thriving with a low unemployment rate of 2.6%, the third-lowest among major cities, and affordable living costs, ranking fourth-lowest overall. With 41.2% of Millennials holding a bachelor’s degree, the city's educated workforce is well-suited to meet the demands of these growing fields. Huntsville’s 10% increase in the Millennial population share further underscores its appeal as a destination for young professionals.

Crestwood Medical Center opens freestanding ER in Harvest

Crestwood Medical Center has opened the first freestanding emergency department in North Alabama, located at 1337 Burwell Road in Harvest. This new facility aims to provide immediate emergency care for residents of rural communities like Harvest, Northwestern Madison County, and Northeastern Limestone County, which previously faced longer wait times for medical services. Staffed by about 40 doctors, nurses, and other professionals from Crestwood’s primary office, the center features new equipment, including CT scanners and a specialized trauma room.

Joe Davis Stadium to host first collegiate soccer match

Women's soccer will debut at Joe Davis Stadium on August 18, with the University of North Alabama (UNA) and Jacksonville State (Jax State) facing off at 7 PM. This annual rivalry match will be held at a neutral site for the first time. Tickets are $10 and available through the Huntsville City FC box office. The weekend also features a Huntsville City FC match against New York Red Bulls II on August 17. This event marks the start of a busy soccer season in Huntsville, which will host the Gulf South Conference championship and the NJCAA Division II national championships later in the fall.

“The Spring City Mills located on West Clinton Street were totally destroyed by fire shortly before daylight yesterday morning, the blaze having been first discovered about 3 o'clock a.m. Sunday. The Moxy Hotel will soon grace Downtown Huntsville, featuring 6 stories, 140 rooms, and a parking garage. Positioned between the AC Hotel and the Bartley Lofts, the Moxy will also be home to The Bartley Social on its ground level. This artisanal food hall and social venue will be Huntsville's first, boasting an elevated restaurant, bar, and over 12 unique dining and shopping vendors.

Hattie B’s Hot Chicken Expanding to Huntsville 🍗

Hattie B’s Hot Chicken, a Nashville-based eatery known for its signature southern cuisine, is expanding to Huntsville. The new location will be part of the Stadium Commons development along South Memorial Parkway, near Joe Davis Stadium. This mixed-use project will include restaurants, retail space, offices, housing, a hotel, and a parking garage. Co-founder Nick Bishop, Jr. expressed excitement about the Huntsville expansion, featuring Hattie B’s first drive-thru. The restaurant is set to open by the end of 2025.

Trash Pandas 🦝

After the Rocket City Trash Pandas won a huge series against the conference-leading Birmingham Barons, taking five out of six games, they did the reverse and lost five of six games against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.

They’ve been off for all-star break since Monday but start back up tonight at the Tennessee Smokies. The Trash Pandas currently have a record of 43-43. You can purchase tickets here for next week’s series against the Chattanooga Lookouts.

Huntsville City Football Club secured a 2-1 victory against New England Revolution II at Gillette Stadium. Jony Bolaños scored in the 33rd minute, and Woobens Pacius netted the winner early in the second half. Huntsville will next play on Sunday, July 21, at Inter Miami CF II, available on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV. Notable performances included Bryan Dowd's debut with seven saves and Jony Bolaños serving as team captain and scoring his fifth goal of the season.

AHSAA North-South All-Star Week to Begin in Montgomery

The 2024-25 Alabama High School Athletic Association season unofficially kicked off on Monday with the 28th annual North-South All-Star Week in Montgomery. Over 360 student-athletes will compete in eight sports, and more than 4,000 coaches, administrators, and officials will attend the 2024 AHSAA Summer Conference at the Montgomery Renaissance Hotel and Conference Center. Competitions include golf, baseball, cross country, basketball, tennis, softball, soccer, and volleyball.

Huntsville Times Athletes of the Year

Readers of al.com have overwhelmingly chosen Westminster Christian athletes as The Huntsville Times Boys and Girls Athletes of the Year for the 2023-24 school year. Wildcats quarterback Brandon Musch and Charleston Southern football commit received 93% of the votes, followed by Buckhorn’s Caleb Holt, Fyffe's Logan Anderson, and Bob Jones' Braden Booth. Soccer star AnnaLi Weekley garnered the most votes on the girls' side. Congrats to both athletes!
