Tom Morello Replaces Jane’s Addiction at Huntsville’s South Star Festival
Rock icon Tom Morello has joined the lineup for the inaugural South Star Music Festival in Huntsville, Alabama, replacing Jane’s Addiction. The change comes after Jane’s Addiction canceled their 2024 tour following an onstage altercation between Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro. Morello, known for his work with Rage Against The Machine, will perform on the Supersonic Stage.
The festival, produced by C3 Presents, also features acts like Gwen Stefani, blink-182, Beck, and TLC. South Star marks Huntsville’s return to large-scale music festivals since Big Spring Jam ended in 2011.

Huntsville Residents Invited to Free Health and Wellness Fair on Sept. 28
The City of Huntsville is hosting the annual North Alabama Health & Wellness Fair on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Calhoun Community College-Huntsville. The free event offers essential health screenings, including blood pressure, cholesterol, and depression checks, along with healthy snacks, prizes, and wellness resources.
A Walk for Healthy Living will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon, encouraging residents to stay active. Spanish interpreters will be available to ensure accessibility for all attendees.
Alabama A&M Secures $248K for Nuclear Propulsion Research
Alabama A&M University Assistant Professor Dr. Clyde Varner has received $248,000 in grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA to advance nuclear propulsion technologies for space exploration. His research, focusing on uranium carbide nuclear fuels, aims to support NASA’s goal of deep-space missions, including human exploration of Mars.
NSF’s EPSCoR program contributed $188,502, while NASA provided $60,000 to enhance research facilities. Varner’s project combines computational modeling with experimental validation, involving Alabama A&M students working alongside NASA scientists. This collaboration strengthens the university’s role in cutting-edge space research.

Costco to open in Madison, Alabama on November 15
Madison, Alabama, is set to welcome a new Costco Wholesale store, opening on November 15, 2024, at 8 a.m. The store will be located at 894 Highway 72 West, near the Clift Farm area. This marks the fourth Costco location in Alabama and the second in Madison County, offering residents a wide range of products and membership benefits.
The store's opening follows major infrastructure improvements, including the widening of Wall Triana Highway to ease traffic flow. Local excitement is building as the development promises to enhance shopping options and convenience in the rapidly growing community.
Total Quality Logistics to open Huntsville office, creating 100 new jobs
Ohio-based Total Quality Logistics (TQL), the second-largest freight brokerage in North America, is reported to be opening a new office in Huntsville, creating 100 job opportunities.
The new office will be located in Bradford Office Park within Cummings Research Park. TQL, which first established operations in Alabama by opening a Mobile office in 2014 and expanding to Birmingham in 2016, has been recognized nine times as one of the “Best Companies to Work for in Alabama.” While the exact opening date for the Huntsville office is yet to be announced, those interested can apply now.
Huntsville Bookstore The Snail on the Wall opens brick-and-mortar shop
The Snail on the Wall, a Huntsville-based bookstore that began in 2017 as a pop-up and online retailer, has officially opened a physical store on Wellman Avenue. Co-owners Lady Smith and Christina Tabereaux, who have run the business for the past year and a half, celebrated the grand opening with enthusiastic crowds.
Smith expressed excitement about the community’s support, acknowledging the risks of opening an independent bookstore in the age of big-box stores and online shopping. Tabereaux highlighted the shop's personal touch, offering tailored recommendations to regular customers. The new store, located at 816 Wellman Ave NE, plans to host events featuring bestselling authors.
Local Huntsville Car Shop Gains Fame Among Rappers
Huntsville’s Spokes and Vogues is making headlines as top rappers turn to the local custom car shop for their vehicle remodels. With rap legends Three 6 Mafia set to perform at the Orion Amphitheater this Saturday, shop owner Lee Adams is in the spotlight once again.
Adams, who has worked with Snoop Dogg in the past, is currently customizing another car for the rapper, which could feature in an upcoming film. He’s also working on a vehicle for Too Short, set to appear in the rapper's next album release. Huntsville isn’t just attracting rap stars for performances—it's becoming a hub for custom car work too.
