21st annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run 5K & Survivors' Walk 👣👟💖

The Huntsville Hospital Foundation invites everyone to participate in the 21st annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run 5K & Survivors' Walk. This event aims to raise funds for the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund, which supports local breast cancer patients and survivors. Proceeds from the 2024 Ribbon Run will be used to upgrade the software of three 3D mammogram machines at the Huntsville Hospital Breast Center, improving the accuracy of mammographic image analysis.

Huntsville adjusts sanitation rates to guarantee optimal service

The City of Huntsville operates 25 daily sanitation routes, collecting garbage from over 70,000 households using automated trucks and boom trucks for yard debris and curbside items. Residents pay $16.50 per month, but a proposed ordinance would raise the rate to $21.50 in 2025 and $24.50 in 2027, marking the first increase since 2010. Excessive bulk collection rates will also rise.

Huntsville plans for refurbishment of historic Goldsmith-Schiffman Field

Huntsville’s historic Goldsmith-Schiffman Field is set for a major update. The City has approved a contract with Foresite Group to lead the design work for the Goldsmith-Schiffman Park Development project, focusing on civil engineering and landscape architecture.

Initially opened in 1934 as a high school football stadium, the field now hosts flag football games and is known for its iconic stone wall. Plans for the park include adding pickleball courts, a lawn for two flag football fields, a new concession/restroom building, and a playground. The stone wall will remain but will undergo a structural evaluation.

Food Bank of North Alabama funding

During budget discussions, Council Member John Meredith introduced a budget amendment to provide $150,000 to the Food Bank of North Alabama (FBNA) for the organization’s building project, which the Council unanimously supported. The money was redistributed from the road resurfacing budget, constituting a one-time award to FBNA.

Brick & Tin expands to Huntsville with new location in historic Lewter District

A popular Birmingham restaurant, Brick & Tin, known for its farm-to-table menu and locally sourced ingredients, is coming to Huntsville. The restaurant will occupy a 5,500-square-foot space in the historic Lewter District, seating 70 people indoors and 46 outdoors. Construction is set to begin in early 2025

Alabama to Build EV Technology Center

Alabama is building a 40,000-square-foot EV Technology Center at the Alabama Robotics Technology Park near Huntsville to train workers in electric vehicle production. Operated by Alabama Industrial Development Training (AIDT), the facility will equip the workforce with skills needed for the growing electric vehicle industry. Ellen McNair, Alabama’s Secretary of Commerce, emphasized the state's commitment to maintaining its strong auto industry.

McAlister's Deli reopens in Huntsville with new owners

McAlister's Deli in Huntsville is re-opening under new franchise owners at its Perimeter Parkway location. The fast-casual deli, known for its fresh sandwiches, giant spuds, salads, and desserts, will feature an updated interior. The location had been closed for a few years but is now set to return at 1480 Perimeter Pkwy NW, Huntsville, AL 35806.

The Huntsville Havoc have announced the signing of defenseman Brodie Thornton. Thornton, 25, is a 6'1" defenseman from Macomb Township, Michigan, entering his first professional season. Last season, he helped Adrian College (ACHA D1) win a National Championship, playing 110 games and recording 72 points throughout his collegiate career.

Week 1: Trey Greenwell, Decatur (15 tackles, a 60-yard pick-six, and a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown.)

Week 2: Noah Gaunt, Randolph: Gaunt went for 153 yards and two touchdowns at receiver in a 32-31 win over Class 4A No. 8 Madison Academy. He also recovered a fumble for a touchdown.

Drew Talley, a former Huntsville High and Mississippi State baseball player and co-owner of Talley Performance and Top Tier SE, has taken a significant step toward improving the city’s baseball infrastructure. Talley has officially requested a meeting with Mayor Tommy Battle to discuss much-needed renovations and possibly developing new baseball fields in Huntsville. To demonstrate the community’s support, Talley has launched a petition urging Huntsville residents to lend their voices to this cause.
